Where did all the Independent woman go?

The late 90's and early naughties gave us girl power with the likes of Spice Girls and Destiney's Child singing about Bills, bills, bills and Independent Women.
2010 however seems to have gone the complete reverse, the lyrics in Teairra Mari's new song intitled “Sponsor" talks about how the shoe's and jewellery she wears is brought by her man in this case her sponsor.

"Yeah, yeah, he put them low profiles on my car
He treat me to a pedi plus manicure

Anything that I ask for from my sponsor

He go and bu-bu-buy, buy

A baby blue medallion I just got
My feet they speak Italian, walk so high

I told you, baby, thanks a lot my sponsor

He go and bu-bu-buy, buy, yeah

He ain’t no square, he just like to share
In love with the tipper throwing hundreds in the air
Throw some over here
And Louis, drop the Louis, put the Louis in my lap, damn..."

FATIMA - 'SOUL GLO' (EGLO) VIDEO

'Soul Glo' (Eglo Records) is taken from Fatima's Mindtravelin EP which is out now via Eglo Records and all good record stores. This is Sweden born East London resident's first official solo release, we love what we hear and hope you do.

Mary J. Blige (Feat. Tiziano Ferro) – Each Tear

Mary J. Blige (Feat. Tiziano Ferro) – Each Tear
Off her current album Stronger wtith Each Tear available on Itunes and Amazon MP3

Personally without any doubt Mary J Blige is one of those artists that seems to get better and better with time and musically has been consistent.  When it has come to duo's she has joined up with many artists outside of her genre, however this partnership seems to have worked well for Mary and the relationship can be seen in the tracks.

I love this track and the message.

Lady Gaga - Telephone ft. Beyoncé

What ever opinion you may have regarding Lady Gaga, you can not argue the fact that as an artist she is not afraid to go out there and she does just that with this video which is gritty, visually cinematic and very explicit.

This is probably one of the most hyped video so far this year, a 9 minute long music video which could be mistaken for a short film (a modern day Thelma and Louise) full of half naked dancing female inmates and a pussy wagon.

Not sure what some of Beyonce fan will make of it. However I am loving her look in this video she is defiantly looking fierce.

What did people think of the over product placement in this video?
What do you think of the video Hot/Not?

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all our members and followers many of whom are juggling both mother hood with their creative careers and ventures, being a mother may somethimes seem a thankless task however the reward is great. Mothers all around the world are creating the possible geniuses, peacemakers, inventors, creators and greats of our future to come.

We should take this time out to make our mothers feel that much more special today, tell them you love them, tell them they are fantastice, and give them a hug. And remeber you can always let them know you love them any time of the year we don’t always have to wait till today.

Kathryn Bigelow makes History at Oscars

We know that the Oscars for many people are all about what the celebrities will be wearing and as much as we look forward to the red carpet glitz and glam we are also excited about who walks away with an award. And this year’s 82nd Oscars Award was one award show worth getting excited about it did not disappoint.

We saw Kathryn Bigelow walk away with Best Director for The Hurt Locker, this is the first time the award has gone to a women making it a historical event.

"I'd love to just think of myself as a film-maker, and I long for the day when a modifier can be a moot point,…… But I'm ever grateful if I can inspire some young, intrepid, tenacious male or female film-maker and have them feel that the impossible is possible and to never give up on your dream."

This award can only give budding female directors the confidence to come forth with their work and hopefully pave the way for more female directors and hopefully highlight their skills to a very male dominated industry.

Also let’s not forget Mo’Nique who won Best Supporting Female Actress for her powerful portrayal of an abusive mother in Precious. And Sandra Bullock who won Best Actress for Leading Female Actress

Best Picture.
• The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro

Actress in a Leading Role
• Sandra Bullock
The Blind Side

Actress in a Supporting Role
• Mo'Nique
Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire

Costume Design
• The Young Victoria
Sandy Powell

Directing
• The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow

Documentary Short
• Music by Prudence
Roger Ross Williams and Elinor Burkett

6th Birds Eye View Festival / Opening Night

Thursday 4th March saw the opening night of this year's 6th Bird's Eye View Film Festival. A film festival dedicated to showcasing and celebrating women filmmakers" held every year during March. The opening night was held at BFI and featured a selection of new shorts by women.

The Odds by Paloma Baenza (UK 2009, 12 min)
Slaves by Hanna Heilborn and David Aronowitsch (Sweden 2009, 16 min)
The Conservatory by Matilda Tristram, (UK 2008, 2 min)
The Door by Juanita Wilson (Ireland 2008, 17 min (Oscar nominated.)
Heat by Debbie Tucker Green (UK 2009 12 min)

My favorite of the batch were The Odds, Slaves and Heat.

These were followed with a Q&A with Paloma, Matilda and producer of Heat & BEV board member Polly Leys.  Who talked about the process of making their fims, difficulties they faced and how they got funding. The night ended with music, drinks and fun and saw many woman in the film industry and film lovers coming together to celebrate their talents.

The opening night of shorts were just a taste of what else we can expect from BEV, which promises, seminars, masterclasses, networking, film screens, UK Premieres, first weekender club and parting.
